Depression Q&A

What is depression?

Depression is a mood disorder that causes negative feelings, thoughts, and actions. It’s one of the two most common mental health disorders among Americans, second to anxiety disorders.

What are the different kinds of depression?

The most common types of depression are:

Major depression

Major depressive disorder (major depression) causes symptoms such as:

  • Empty, hopeless, worthless, guilty, and deeply sad feelings
  • Low energy
  • Loss of interest in normal activities
  • Lack of pleasure from things you enjoyed before
  • Insomnia (poor sleep quality or duration) or sleeping too much
  • Appetite changes (usually with weight changes)
  • Difficulty thinking quickly
  • Slowed-down movements or speaking (observed by others)
  • Thoughts of suicide

Major depressive disorder often leads to physical issues like stomach pain or headaches as well. With major depression, symptoms usually interrupt your normal activities, at least to some degree. These symptoms continue for at least two weeks and usually persist for most of the day.

Treatment-resistant depression (TRD)

TRD refers to inadequate improvement with one or more oral antidepressants. Studies indicate that up to 55% of people with major depressive disorder may have TRD.

Manic depression

Manic depression is now called bipolar disorder. This mood disorder features

manic episodes (periods of intense energy) or depressive episodes (periods of intense sadness). Some people have both.
