OCD Q&A

What is OCD?

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a mental health disorder that disrupts daily life by causing obsessions and compulsions.

Obsessions

Obsessions are highly distressing thoughts, mental images, and urges. Trying to fight them can be extraordinarily difficult, frustrating, and draining.

Compulsions

Compulsions are the actions that make the obsessions go away temporarily. A few examples are excessive cleaning rituals, checking and rechecking things often, and counting objects.

People who have OCD engage in at least an hour of obsessions and compulsions daily.

How is OCD treated?

OCD treatment usually includes pairing mental health therapy, such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), and medication.

A handful of drugs are FDA-approved to treat OCD, but they’re mainly used for depression and other conditions. Those antidepressants fail for as many as 6 in 10 people with OCD. Fortunately, there are alternative therapies with excellent results.

What are the alternative therapies for OCD?

Psychiatric Services of The Rockies offers groundbreaking treatments, including:

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS)

TMS is a painless noninvasive treatment that uses a mild electrical current to stimulate the specific brain structures involved in OCD. This influences neural activity, ultimately having a direct effect on your thoughts and behaviors.

TMS, which has FDA approval, can rapidly reduce obsessions and compulsions, with long-lasting results. It has an excellent success rate, with almost 60% of patients experiencing significantly fewer symptoms for more than one year.

Ketamine

Ketamine gained FDA approval as a surgical anesthetic in 1970, but more recently, it has been used to successfully treat major depressive disorder, anxious depression, and OCD. This drug has a unique effect in which it rapidly restores the parts of the brain affected by these conditions.

There are several forms of ketamine, including nasal spray, lozenges, injections, and infusions. Intranasal ketamine is FDA-approved for treatment-resistant depression. All other uses are off-label, but many people with OCD have shown excellent results in clinical trials.

At Psychiatric Services of the Rockies, Dr. Ziegler designs a customized OCD treatment path for you. Most of the time, psychiatric care, mental health therapy, and medication management are all available through telemedicine.

You need to come into the office for ketamine and TMS, but Dr. Ziegler can see you through telemedicine for all of the appointments in between sessions.
